Knowledge management + Social network technologies = Knowledge Network Management

With the list of major IT companies entering the world of social technologies increasing by the day it is clear that the next big thing in Enterprise knowledge management for 2007 and 2008 is the combination of knowledge management tools and social networking technologies.

Google [51] announced in late 2006 that it will enter the office productivity software business and [52] acquired in October 2006 the web collaboration tool Jotspot. Microsoft has introduced its [53] Sharepoint and IBM is embracing social networks in their [54] Lotusphere 2007. Cisco [55] bought the community building software firm Five Across in February and [56] bought in March the web conferencing tool Webex.

What is the importance of those deals for Enterprise Knowledge Management?
Enterprise Knowledge Management has gone through different stages. Initially it was not more than a collection of knowledge databases, based on theories on tacit and explicit knowledge. Documenting and sharing information was the key to retain knowledge in the organization. However, with an increasing mobility of the workforce many of the knowledge management systems died due to lack of ownership, complexity of the stored knowledge and increasingly a mismatch between benefits and maintenance costs of the existing systems.

In the first years of this decade a new tool emerged: Corporate blogging. In many companies used as a tool for top management to communicate with the workforce, but also a tool to express knowledge by the individual employee. The expert on a specific topic had found a platform to share his knowledge with a wider public than only his direct employees. Interest groups were formed and topic experts from all over the world could suddenly communicate with each other via blogs, comments and discussion fora. In particular for global companies as IBM this functionality enabled them to scout expertise and bring them together to work on a project.

However, when time passed by the blogs became again pools of data and because of the size it has become more time consuming to find the experts.

The rise of Social Network technologies
Social network technologies nowadays offer a solution to this paradox. I covered earlier a launch of the product Illumio ([57] Maximize potential of asking the right questions), which is a group Q&A tool with intelligent matching. Illumio matches seekers and solvers by using tags and desktop search tools. It anonymously locates users that have expertise on a specific topic, i.e. a solver and ask them to share the information with the seeker. Even stronger and of more importance for in-company use is the use of groups, which are closer communities where information can more freely flow.
Where the current knowledge management systems place the responsibility and activity-need on the shoulders of a user, the new social network technologies automatically locate the expert. It enables the user to access the huge pool of blogs, comments and posts in discussion fora and interest groups without the time-consuming work of finding the relevant data.

Therefore the next big thing in Enterprise Knowledge management is the combination of Knowledge Management with Social Network technologies. By combining the current knowledge management practices in companies with the light-weight applications available in social technologies a company is able to manage its internal knowledge more effectively.

Knowledge Management + Social Network Technologies = Knowledge Network Management.

The more effective a company can manage their knowledge network, the better the company will be able to leverage internal knowledge and improve business performance.
