How is knowledge transferred among companies? What are strategies and stumbling blocks in the knowledge transfer proces?

The wiki-page “Knowledge Transfer” is dedicated to these questions. Based on literature in the fields of learning in strategic alliances, organizational learning and knowledge management i have collected answers to it.

After defining knowledge transfer the wiki-page shows that a number of processes are in use to transfer knowledge. When designing a knowledge transfer system Appleyard suggests to categorize the mechanisms based on the use and the access character of the knowledge. A wide array on knowledge transfer mechanisms are in use, and not all mechanisms should be used are suitable for every situation. Therefore Lazarova introduced the notion of high, medium and low intensity of knowledge transfer tools.

Several authors describe stumbling blocks in the knowledge transfer process. I am interested whether the stumbling blocks are tool-dependent, so whether e.g. the ‘lack of reward or cultural motivaton’ is in particular hindering private access - restricted use of knowledge.
